Reviews • Oct.3, 2021

Ever had your smartphone malfunction? Did you lose some data that you can’t get back? Stuck on the boot screen on your phone? Well, instead of going to the service center and paying a lot of money to get it fixed. Let’s try and fix the device ourselves through a great data recovery and management app – Dr. Fone.

Wondershare Dr. Fone is an app designed to help with data recovery and management for all Android and iOS devices. It consists of features such as System Repair, Data Backups, Data Eraser, and many more and is supposed to be the central hub for all your mobile phones. So, let’s take an in-depth look at Dr. Fone and see if it is for you.

FAQs on Dr. Fone

What is Dr. Fone?

Dr. Fone is a central data management and recovery app that Wondershare made. It comes with many toolkits for management, and it works with both Android and iOS devices. Dr. Fone is compatible with Windows and macOS and can be downloaded through the link above.

How does Dr. Fone work?

Dr. Fone comes with various toolkits for different functions. However, the basic process to get started is through connecting your smartphone to your PC or Mac and then using Dr. Fone to either restore, recover, backup data, or fix your device from crashes or booting issues.

Is Dr. Fone safe?

Yes, Dr. Fone is safe to use. We did complete tests on all the functions and didn’t found any data leak. Wondershare Dr. Fone also doesn’t store any of your data, so you can rest easy that all your data would be safe.

We even scanned the app for malware or viruses and didn’t find anything suspicious. The app only requires permissions to managing your files, and you can use it offline for better data protection.

Is Dr. Fone free to try?

Yes, Dr. Fone does come with a trial version. However, it is seriously limited to basic features and needs you to buy the toolkits for anything you want. So, we recommend you check out the trial and upgrade if you really want the feature.

Does Dr. Fone work on Apple Silicon?

Dr. Fone doesn’t list compatibility with the M1 Macbooks, but we are pretty sure that the app should work. The underlying code is relatively new, and Apple is also working to improve app support for all their Macbooks.

Dr.Fone: the good

Dr. Fone has a lot of features that can help you recover data or repair your phone. However, not all the features are top-notch. So, here are all the features that we thought were great and easy to use:

1. Dr. Fone Data Recovery and Backup

The “Data Recovery” toolkit is also something that we enjoyed using. It showed a lot of promise for recovering data off of any Android device or iPhone. We managed to recover photos, text messages, and others files. However, we also did notice errors with some corrupted files. Hence, the experience may be different depending from user to user, and you can follow the steps below to try and recover data from your phone:

  • Run the Dr. Fone app and connect your smartphone
  • Next, click on the “Data Recovery” toolkit and follow the on-screen instructions
  • Now, select all the files you want to recover and click the “Next” button, as shown in the screenshot above
  • Finally, wait for the process to be completed, and you will find some files that may or may not be the ones you wanted

Note: You can also use the “Phone Backup” tool to keep your data secure and protect it if anything goes wrong.

2. Dr. Fone System Repair

The easiest and probably the best feature that Dr. Fone comes with. The “System Repair” toolkit makes a gruesome task of repairing your iPhone or Android device and makes it as easy as clicking on a few buttons. If you have a phone that is stuck on the boot screen or is bricked, then you can use the steps below to fix your device:

  • Firstly, run the Dr. Fone app and turn on your smartphone
  • Next, select the “System Repair” toolkit from the app and then connect your device to your Mac or PC
  • Now, select the repair you want according to your device. We have chosen “Android Repair”, but the overall process for “iOS Repair” is also the same
  • Next, click on the “Start” button as shown above in the screenshot and then follow the on-screen instructions
  • It will ask you to download the firmware for your phone, and then after a few minutes of waiting, depending on your internet connection, you can proceed with the next step
  • Finally, select your phone’s firmware and then let the app restore your device with the latest updated firmware

Note: This process will erase all the data present on your iPhone or Android device. So, make sure to have a backup handy.

3. Dr. Fone Photo and Data Transfer (Mac and iOS)

Another great feature from Dr. Fone. However, it is only helpful to iOS and macOS users. Transferring photos and other data from an Android or iPhone smartphone is as easy as copying and pasting it on your PC. In comparison, Apple makes it a lot more challenging to do so. So, if you want to transfer photos or other data quickly from your iPhone to your Mac, simply choose the “Photo Transfer” feature and select all the photos you want to be transferred to your Mac. You can also create a “New Album” or directly export the photo library to your Mac.

4. Dr. Fone WhatsApp Backup

We all know that transferring WhatsApp data from an Android device to an iPhone is very difficult and cannot be done by usual methods. However, Dr. Fone made that easy and allowed us to quickly transfer and backup all my WhatsApp data from the Android phone and restore it to the new iPhone. You can also take advantage of the WhatsApp data transfer and backup toolkit to transfer the data to your new device.

5. Dr. Fone Password Manager

Finally, we made it to the latest toolkit that was added with the recent update. The “Password Manager” toolkit does what it is supposed to. It manages all your passwords and keeps them secured whenever you require a password. Logging into a page, filling in WiFi passwords, Keeping track of your Apple ID passwords brings a lot of conveniences. It also works with other password managers such as Lastpass or Dashlane and perfectly integrates with your daily life.

Note: You can also just view the passwords and note them down or log in through them for any of the apps or accounts.

Dr. Fone: the bad

While Dr. Fone comes with a lot of great features, it also has a few bummers. While most of the toolkits worked great, there were a few that didn’t impress us, and they are:

1. Dr. Fone Screen Unlock

While the initial experience with the “Screen Unlock” toolkit was decent, we eventually ran into some bumps. Don’t get us wrong, the tool supposedly works and will unlock your iPhone or Android lock screen. It is incredible for Android devices, and it did the job with ease. This led us to believe the process would be similar for iOS devices. However, iOS devices normally won’t let you unlock a locked screen without the password, and when you use Dr. Fone to unlock your screen, it will reset it and flash a new firmware. This means that you will lose all your data.

Note: You can use the “Screen Unlock” to help you unlock the screen through Mac or PC, but it does not retain any data for iOS devices. In contrast, Android smartphones work perfectly with the toolkit.

2. Dr. Fone Data Eraser

Another bummer tool from Dr. Fone. The “Data Eraser” toolkit didn’t work as advertised. It did help to remove some junk and trash files that were taking up storage space on my iPhone and cleared around 2.7 GB of data. However, the process was buggy, and it mainly removed the cache files. Removing cache and some junk files is easy, and you can also do it right from your smartphone. Hence, using the tool makes little sense, but you can definitely do the same and try it out.

Note: While this toolkit didn’t work for us, you can definitely try it out and give it a shot as the experience might depend from user to user.

Availability and pricing

Dr. Fone is available for both Windows and macOS. It comes with various toolkits that can all be purchased separately or with a complete package. Here is a list of all the toolkits that Dr. Fone comes with and their prices:

  • Fone Android Toolkit – $80
  • Fone iOS Toolkit – $100
  • Fone Full Toolkit – $140

Note: There are other toolkits that are made for niche tasks such as Data Recover, Password Management, System Repair, and many more that you can purchase separately. You can take a look at all the toolkits listed on their store page.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Easy to use with a minimal UI
  • Advanced features for data recovery and system repair
  • iPhone and Android data management
  • Quick and easy app and data backup process

Cons

  • Can have some errors in data recovery
  • It has a lot of toolkits that make the experience cluttered
  • It can get very expensive depending on the toolkits you use

Dr. Fone alternatives

Wondershare has made a tremendous all-around app with Dr. Fone. It comes with a lot of tools and can help you get everything done with ease. However, if you don’t want to use Dr. Fone for reasons such as being expensive or cluttered, you can look at the alternatives below.

EaseUS MobiSaver – MobiSaver from EaseUS is a great replacement to Dr. Fone. However, it doesn’t support both Android and iOS in a single app and has different versions for both. Other than that, the app works as expected and can help you manage your smartphone’s data and recover it with relative ease. Oh, and it also comes with a free version that is great at everything it does.

Tenorshare UltData – Tenorshare UltData is another tool for data recovery and management. However, it too has separate versions for iOS and Android and is specifically built to recover data and nothing else. It also works with older phones and should be your preferred choice if you have an older phone and you want to recover data from it.

iMyFone Umate – The Umate tool from iMyFone is specifically built to help manage and clean data from your Android or iOS devices. However, it doesn’t have all the features and cannot help recover data or repair the system firmware. Other than that, the app works perfectly as a data manager and eraser tool for all your smartphones.

Final words

Recovering data, restoring the system image, transferring WhatsApp backups, or spoofing your location. All these tasks might seem challenging at first, but with Dr. Fone, it becomes as easy as clicking a button or two.

While the app is beneficial and valuable, it is still very expensive. Hence, we recommend you download the trial version first and give it a shot before upgrading. With that said, we end our guide here and hope you have an easy time repairing your phone or backing up data.
