iMazing: This iOS management tool way better than iTunes

We love many things about iPhones. Managing them from a Mac has never been one of them.

If you’ve ever tried to manage backups, messages, or media beyond Apple’s defaults, you already know the frustration.

Finder replaced iTunes — but not the things power users actually relied on: browsing backups, exporting messages, managing apps in bulk, or keeping long-term archives. And that’s why tools like iMazing still matter.

What Is iMazing

iMazing — developed by DigiDNA — has been evolving since its original release as DiskAid back in 2008. Today, it’s one of the most capable iOS and iPadOS device management tools on Mac and Windows, often described by pros as a “Swiss Army knife” for Apple devices.

In real-world use, iMazing lets you:

  • Back up and restore devices (with multiple snapshot support).
  • Transfer files between computers and iPhones/iPads.
  • Manage media libraries, messages, and app data.
  • Export conversations, call logs, and attachments.
  • Explore and restore selective data from backups.

Unlike Apple’s Finder, iMazing doesn’t hide power behind simplicity — it exposes it, responsibly.

From our interview with DigiDNA CEO Jérôme Bédat:

“Reliability and user experience form our core values. Many IT professionals and lawyers use iMazing in mission-critical applications. We believe that our diligent work in ensuring smooth operation despite constant changes in iOS, macOS, and Windows environments sets iMazing apart. “

Our Hands-on iMazing Review

We tested the latest version, iMazing 3.5, on a MacBook Air M2, running macOS Tahoe, with our daily-use iPhone 15 and an iPad Air 5. We examined usability, features, and how it compares day-to-day against Finder and earlier iMazing version.

The Interface

The latest version of iMazing brings a cleaner UI with a collapsible sidebar, freeing up more space for actual content. The Discover pane gives quick access to the tools you actually use, and you can easily jump between devices, backups, and actions.

We use an iPhone 15 and an iPad Air 5. So, we could conveniently keep track of both devices from a single screen. Thanks to its Wi-Fi connectivity, we didn’t even have to keep them connected. Once you select a connected device, iMazing shows advanced options as well.

Overall, we found the user interface to be easy to navigate and intuitive.

Backups & Snapshots

Backups are essential on an iOS manager, and iMazing offers some great options. We felt iMazing backups are more like Time Machine backups because you can create snapshots at different points in time. Once you have a backup, iMazing retrieves content from it instead of the main device.

Conventional backups are easy, as you can simply choose the backup encryption level, location, and all the things you need to back up. It is convenient that iMazing lets you store backups on external drives. We think it’s better than adding more content to our Mac’s internal SSD. Backup Snapshots are somehow better.

The backup feature is useful for those who need regular iOS/iPadOS backups without wasting storage space. You get to keep everything intact without a massive loss of storage space. We also like iMazing Mini, which lets us manage backups and snapshots via Wi-Fi.

Device Overview

Once iMazing fetches your device backup, you can view a rich dashboard that shows device info, battery health, storage, installed apps, and more. This interface provided a much-needed overview of the device, and it’s nice that you can export all this information in a single click.

We often use this to export things like IMEI numbers for later reference. Though you can find some of this information on your iPhone or iPad, iMazing gives a detailed overview.

iMazing also supports viewing Apple Watch backups. While limited, it’s a promising start for users who want better control over their wearable data.

Data Management

iMazing’s Data section clearly outshines Apple’s defaults. This iOS manager lets you access and manage the following elements while retaining complete control.

  • Photos

For instance, you can use the Photos app to manage your entire media library.

iMazing Photos brings a lot to the table with ease-of-life features that people like you and us will appreciate. We regularly use it for cleaning up photo galleries, especially after a big event. The sorting options make a noticeable difference when viewing, organizing, and exporting files in Photos.

But batch deletion worked a charm, letting us delete unwanted images with a single click, which saved a lot of time. It can also help you convert ProRAW images to popular formats like JPEG or PNG.

  • Music

The Music app offers complete control over your music library on iPhones, iPads, and iPods, and introduces a dedicated Music Player feature. This addition lets you sample songs before copying them, offering an alternative to Apple Music or iTunes by enabling direct listening through your computer speakers.

Note: it can’t access Apple Music streaming content due to copyright restrictions, but it handles local music libraries effortlessly.

  • Messages and IM (WhatsApp)

IMazing makes it easy to export conversations from Apple Messages and other instant messaging apps, such as WhatsApp. The best thing we noticed is that it exports all messages into an aesthetically pleasing video format, which is great for safekeeping.

With iMazing 3, this experience is enhanced further:

  • Beautifully styled PDF/CSV/Excel exports
  • Attachments with metadata
  • Smoother viewing than Finder or iCloud backups

For professionals needing documentation or personal archiving, this feature alone is worth the price.

Call history and voicemail views got smarter, and we appreciate seeing total conversation times in the sidebar—a must-have for billing or tracking client calls professionally.

For those of us with multi-SIM devices, the new columns and filters let us easily separate and sort calls and voicemails by SIM number. These improvements make managing call records way simpler and more practical in daily use.

The Toolkit

The Tools section of iMazing offers significant value for beginners and Pro users alike. Several dozen utilities are baked into the app and organized into categories such as General, OS, Power, Development, and Advanced. We can’t talk about them all, but here are some notable mentions.

The General section has some handy options for data management, including app management, data export, quick transfer, spyware detection, and device-to-device transfer. However, the latest addition to iMazing 3.5 is Screen Recording, which mirrors the iOS device screen and lets you record the content. We’ve used this feature to prepare tutorials and more.

You also have some other options. For instance, to update the version of iOS or iPad OS, or reinstall the OS. iMazing also gives you access to advanced logs and testing options, especially for battery-related issues. We could use this section to toggle Developer Mode, install a custom package, and capture network traffic.

Overall, the tools from iMazing are pretty impressive for most people. Even when you don’t want to use advanced options, the basic backup and data transfer options will still come in handy.

TheSweetBits Verdict

Apple’s Finder may have replaced iTunes, but it didn’t fulfill the real needs of power users. iMazing fills that gap — not by mimicking Apple, but by giving you access Apple chooses not to expose.

If you back up devices, export conversations, manage media libraries, or explore data beyond the basics, iMazing is one of the most useful tools you’ll install on your Mac (or PC).

It won’t replace discipline — but it will remove a lot of friction and frustration.

If that sounds like something you need, iMazing is absolutely worth trying.
