LookAway: The Mac break reminder that knows when to leave you alone

After long hours in front of a screen, dry eyes, a stiff neck, and gradually worsening posture have become a familiar routine for many people. There is no shortage of break reminder apps, yet most of them either pop up too aggressively or interrupt at the worst possible moment — and eventually get turned off.

LookAway is one of the few we have been willing to keep in the menu bar long-term.

What is it?

LookAway is a native Mac app that helps you take regular breaks during long screen sessions. It starts from the familiar 20-20-20 idea but goes further by combining customizable schedules, smart break detection, posture and blink reminders, and optional iPhone sync.

The goal is simple: a break reminder that adapts to your work instead of forcing your work to adapt to the reminder.

As the developer Kushagra put it when launching LookAway 2:

“I built LookAway after feeling the effects of long hours at my Mac myself — dry eyes, a stiff neck, worsening posture, and the mental fog that builds up when you stay glued to a screen for too long. From the beginning, I wanted LookAway to feel calm, thoughtful, and realistic for the way people actually work.”

Our quick experience

Once installed, LookAway sits quietly in the menu bar. You can set your preferred break intervals and durations (the default 20-minute focus / 30-second break is a sensible starting point). It gives clear advance notice before a break and offers a floating countdown so you are never caught off guard.

What impressed us most is the context awareness. During meetings, while watching video, or when recording the screen, LookAway stays silent. Even when a break is due, it will wait if you are still actively typing. It also pauses or resets the timer if it detects you are idle. This “don’t barge in” approach feels far more respectful of real work rhythms than many apps that force a full-screen overlay. During the break itself the screen gently blurs, and a soft sound signals when it’s time to return.

Paired with LookAway Mirror, when your Mac enters a break, your iPhone can also limit distracting apps — reducing the common habit of resting the computer while continuing to scroll on the phone. Break status can now appear on the Mac lock screen and as a Live Activity on iPhone, which is a nice modern touch. Multi-monitor setups are handled cleanly.

Resource usage remains very light when idle, which matches what we expect from a well-behaved native Mac utility. A full 7-day trial is available with no payment required upfront.

Pros

  • Solid context awareness that meaningfully reduces interruption
  • Clean native experience with clear menu bar controls, keyboard shortcuts, and Focus integration
  • Blink and posture reminders add useful layers beyond basic breaks
  • iPhone sync creates a simple cross-device habit loop
  • One-time purchase with a full 7-day trial

Cons

  • People who dislike any form of reminder may still find it unnecessary
  • Advanced customization and stats may feel like overkill for light users
  • Currently Mac-only (Windows support has not shipped yet)

Who it’s for

Worth considering if you spend many hours a day on a Mac and have already ignored (or disabled) simpler break reminders.

Probably unnecessary if you only need an occasional basic timer — free tools like Time Out or Screen Time will be enough.

Privacy note

LookAway does not require an account. It needs some awareness of system activity to provide smart breaks, but according to the developer it does not collect personal content. Anonymous analytics can be disabled in settings.

Pricing

LookAway uses a one-time license model:

  • $19 for one Mac
  • $29 for two Macs
  • Team options available
  • One year of updates included (with lifetime-update options)

It’s also available on Setapp and the Mac App Store. For a focused background utility, the paid-once approach feels more appropriate than another subscription.

TheSweetBits take

LookAway isn’t a revolutionary idea. Break reminder apps have existed for years. What makes this one interesting is the attention paid to the frustrating details: avoiding interruptions during meetings, respecting focus, and gently extending the habit to your phone.

The best small utilities don’t add more to your workflow — they quietly remove friction. LookAway mostly follows that philosophy. For Mac users who live in front of a display, that small intervention can be exactly what they need.
